CHAPTER XXVI - A Clever Trick In A Tight Place.
âOh, itâs you, is it?â Ruby said, startled, for Danger was the last person on earth she wished to see at this especial time.
âWhat are you doing out alone at this hour?â he asked tenderly and solicitously.
âYou must not ask questions,â she replied evasively. âYou know my standing rule is not to tell anything about my patients.â
âAre you on your way home?â he asked.
âYes, after I send something back to my poor friend,â Ruby responded. âHow is the case developing?â she added, hoping to turn the conversation.
âBeautifullyâbeautifully,â was the cheerful reply.
âOh!â gasped Ruby, a little stunned at this disclosure. âThen you have caught the thieves?ââquestioningly.
âSo near that they are just as good as caught,â was the confident reply.
âWonât you trust meâwonât you tell me who they are? You know how interested I am in the case, and how willing I was to help you,â Ruby coaxed tenderly.
âI trust you, childâI would trust you with my life,â he answered stoutly.
What man would not trust the woman he loves?
âOne of the thieves was Admiral Great, the most cunning and clever rogue in the world. Mame Dillon, the stenographer, was the woman in the case, and I hope by to-morrow night to have Great behind the bars and then it is only a question of hours until I get Mame Dillon and burglar number three.â
âI have promised her dear old fatherâI will save her at any cost,â Ruby thought. âI canât let all this trouble come on him.â
âSo you no longer suspect the girl with a ring on her thumb and the son of her employer?â she asked.
âThe girl, yes, the son, no,â he answered.
âYou know I have been working a little on this case myself. I am sure Miss Dillon is innocent. My suspicions rest elsewhere, as you may know by the company I have kept of late,â Ruby explained carefully.
âDo you suspect Ed Diamond?â Danger asked bluntly.
âI would not dare say so since you do not,â she answered evasively. âBy the way, did you know he leaves for Europe at four oâclock in the morning?â she inquired casually.
âNo. When did he decide to go?â Danger asked in surprise.
âSuddenly, this afternoon, I believe. Sails on the Augusta Victoria. Miss Maud Dick goes a week later, I understand. All on the quiet, you know, so please donât betray my confidence. Miss Maud is going over to bid him farewell in the early morning. If I had the powerâOh, what does it matter, you are working this.â
âDo you suspect them?â Danger asked.
âWell, how do you think this thing looks?â she asked in turn.
âVery suspicious.â
âYes?â
âI fancy it would not hurt to get a warrant and detain them for awhile,â he said.
âMy idea exactly. Only you see I have no power to act,â she said joyfully.
âI cannot take you home, Ruby. I am going to headquarters to see what is to be done about this.â
Ruby was only too happy to be freed, and with a few more words, they parted.
